Does Merritt Island, Florida Have a Beach?

Why Merritt Island has river frontage instead of an ocean beach, the closest beaches and drive times, Playalinda fees and launch closures, and what to check before you buy.

No, Merritt Island does not have an ocean beach. It sits between the Indian River Lagoon and the Banana River, so its shoreline is river and canal frontage. The closest Atlantic beaches are in Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral, usually 15 to 25 minutes from central Merritt Island, with Playalinda Beach about an hour north.

"Does Merritt Island have a beach?" comes up with almost every out of state buyer I work with. The name sounds coastal, and on a map the island looks like it touches the ocean. It does not. The barrier island with the ocean beaches is a separate strip of land to the east, and Merritt Island connects to it by causeway. Here is how beach trips work from Merritt Island, where people go, and what to check before you choose a home based on beach time.

Why doesn't Merritt Island have an ocean beach?

Merritt Island is bordered by two lagoon waters, not the Atlantic. The Indian River Lagoon runs along its west side and the Banana River along its east side, and the barrier island with Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral sits across the Banana River.

That geography is the reason so many Merritt Island homes have canal, river, or dock frontage instead of sand. Waterfront here means boating, paddling, and fishing water. If you picture walking from your back door onto an ocean beach, you are picturing Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral, or the beachside towns farther south, not Merritt Island.

What is the closest beach to Merritt Island?

For most of the island, the closest ocean beach is in Cocoa Beach, reached by driving east on State Road 520 across the Banana River. Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral is a close second by way of State Road 528.

Approximate drive times from central Merritt Island near Merritt Square Mall, with light traffic, based on OpenStreetMap routing:

Lori Wilson Park, Cocoa BeachBrevard County Parks and Recreation7 miles, about 15 minutesFree parking, boardwalk, seasonal lifeguards, dog park
Jetty Park, Cape CanaveralCanaveral Port Authority9 miles, about 20 minutesBeach, fishing pier, campground, cruise ship and launch views
Playalinda Beach, Canaveral National SeashoreNational Park Service36 miles, about 1 hourEntrance fee, undeveloped beach, closures for launches

Homes in South Merritt Island and along the southern stretch of South Tropical Trail can be a bit farther from SR 520, and homes in North Merritt Island are closer to the Playalinda route. Time it from the exact address you are considering.

Which Cocoa Beach access do Merritt Island residents use?

Many people head straight east on SR 520 and use the county beach parks in Cocoa Beach. Lori Wilson Park is the one I mention most often because Brevard County lists free parking, restrooms, outdoor showers, six dune crossovers (four ADA accessible), a 3,155 foot nature boardwalk, seasonal lifeguards, and an off leash dog park.

Brevard County also runs Robert P. Murkshe Memorial Park in Cocoa Beach, and the county reports it manages 87 beach accesses in total. City and private lots in Cocoa Beach have their own rules, so check signs where you park.

Can you get to Playalinda Beach from Merritt Island?

Yes. Playalinda Beach is part of Canaveral National Seashore, north of the Kennedy Space Center area, and it is about an hour from central Merritt Island by car. It is the most undeveloped of the three, with dunes and no high rises.

A few things to know before you go:

  • The National Park Service charges an entrance fee. A private vehicle pass is $25 for 7 days, and a park annual pass is $45. The entrance stations take cards only, no cash.
  • Current U.S. military members and dependents can get a free America the Beautiful Military Annual Pass, which covers the entrance fee.
  • During launches from Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, the Park Service closes beach road vistas, closes Playalinda Beach Road between the entry gate and parking lot 1 starting 30 minutes before launch, and notes that NASA can close parts of the park without notice.
  • Parking lots close to incoming traffic when they fill.

Are there river beaches or swimming spots on Merritt Island?

Merritt Island has riverfront parks, boat ramps, and kayak launches rather than ocean style swimming beaches. Most water time on the island is on a boat, a paddleboard, a kayak, or a dock.

If lagoon swimming matters to you, check the Florida Department of Health in Brevard beach and water quality notices before you go, since conditions in the lagoon change. For many of my clients the river side is the draw: calm water for paddling, dolphins and manatees, and quick boat access. The ocean is a short drive when they want waves and sand.

How does beach access affect where you buy on Merritt Island?

If daily ocean beach time is your top priority, the SR 520 route and your distance to it matter more than which side of the island you choose. If boating matters more, canal depth, bridge clearance, and the route to the Barge Canal and Port Canaveral matter more than distance to sand.

What I see with buyers is that many come in thinking they want to be on the beach, then realize they mostly want a pool, a dock, and a 15 minute drive to the ocean. Others decide they want to live beachside after all, and that is a fine answer too. Our South vs North Merritt Island comparison and Merritt Island neighborhoods guide lay out the areas, and the boating and canal communities page covers the water side.

Before you commit, I suggest you:

  1. Drive from the home to Lori Wilson Park or Jetty Park at the time you would usually go.
  2. Check a launch schedule, since big launches can slow SR 528 and the roads near the Space Center.
  3. Look at flood zone and insurance for the exact address, since river frontage brings its own costs.
  4. Read the Merritt Island relocation guide for the rest of the move.

Moving here on military orders? My Military Relocation Professional page covers PCS moves to Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral, and the Brevard County relocation guide on my Space Coast site covers the beachside towns too.
