Drive times from Merritt Island to Orlando International Airport, downtown Orlando, the theme parks, and nearby spots, plus the usual route and what to test before you buy.
Merritt Island is about 44 to 51 driving miles from Orlando. From central Merritt Island, Orlando International Airport (MCO) is usually 50 to 70 minutes away with light traffic, and downtown Orlando is about 65 to 80 minutes. Most drivers take State Road 528, the Beachline Expressway, which has tolls on the way west.

"How far is Merritt Island from Orlando?" and "How far is Merritt Island from the Orlando airport?" are two of the most common questions I hear from people thinking about moving to Merritt Island. Orlando has the big airport, the theme parks, the arenas, and a lot of jobs, so the drive matters when you are choosing where to live in Brevard. The good news is that Merritt Island sits right next to SR 528, which makes it one of the quicker Space Coast trips into Orlando. Below are drive estimates, the usual route, and what to test before you buy.
Plan on a little under an hour to the airport and a little over an hour to downtown Orlando from the middle of the island, with light traffic. Interstate 4, construction, storms, and launch crowds can all add time.
The figures below come from OpenStreetMap routing starting near SR 520 and Courtenay Parkway in central Merritt Island, checked in November 2026 and rounded, with a range added because routing software tends to run optimistic. Treat them as a starting point and test your own drive from the exact address.
| Destination from central Merritt Island | Approximate miles | Approximate drive, light traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Port Canaveral | About 8 | About 15 to 20 minutes |
| Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex | About 14 | About 30 minutes |
| Patrick Space Force Base main area | About 15 | About 30 minutes |
| Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) | About 27 | About 45 minutes |
| Orlando International Airport (MCO) | About 44 | About 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Downtown Orlando | About 51 | About 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes |
| Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) | About 63 | About 1 hour 20 minutes |
| Walt Disney World (Magic Kingdom area) | About 65 | About 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Daytona Beach | About 70 | About 1.5 hours |
Most trips go west on State Road 528, the Beachline Expressway. From central and north Merritt Island you can usually reach it from North Courtenay Parkway or the Bennett Causeway, then stay on it across the Indian River and past Interstate 95 toward the airport and Orlando.
The Beachline section through east Orange County is operated by the Central Florida Expressway Authority, and other parts of SR 528 are part of Florida's Turnpike system. Tolls are collected electronically, so plan on a transponder such as SunPass or E-PASS, or toll by plate billing. Check FL511 from the Florida Department of Transportation for live traffic and lane closures before a time-sensitive trip, like an early flight.
Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) is the other commercial option in Brevard County, about 27 miles south, but it is not much closer in drive time than MCO for most of the island.
That surprises a lot of people. Because SR 528 runs right along the north side of central Merritt Island, Orlando International Airport is often within 15 minutes of the MLB drive, and MCO has far more airlines and nonstop routes. MLB can still be easier for some trips, especially from South Merritt Island, so it is worth checking both for the flights you take most. Orlando Sanford International Airport is farther away and mostly serves a smaller set of airlines.
Some do. A round trip of roughly two hours or more is a lot to do every workday, so it tends to fit hybrid schedules, occasional office days, or jobs on the east side of Orlando near the airport or Lake Nona.
Many Merritt Island residents work much closer to home, at Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Port Canaveral, Patrick Space Force Base, or in Cocoa and Melbourne. If your move comes with a space industry job or a military PCS assignment, I can help you compare drive times from specific streets to the gate or office you will actually use. That is a big part of my work as a Brevard County relocation Realtor and Military Relocation Professional (MRP). Our commute to the Space Center guide covers that side of the island in more detail.
Yes, noticeably. Merritt Island runs long from north to south, so the distance to SR 528 is the main thing that changes your Orlando trip.
In routing estimates from two points on the island, a home near SR 528 north of SR 520 was roughly 10 minutes closer to MCO than a home a few miles south along South Tropical Trail, and the gap grows near Dragon Point. Canal neighborhoods such as Diana Shores and Waterway Manor in South Merritt Island trade some extra drive time for river and canal access. If Orlando trips are frequent for you, add the drive to SR 528 to your list next to flood zone, insurance, and home age. Our South vs North Merritt Island comparison and Merritt Island neighborhoods guide lay out the differences.
Drive the route from the exact home you are considering, at the time you would usually travel. A quick checklist:
For the bigger picture of moving to the area, the Merritt Island relocation guide is a good next stop, and the Brevard County relocation guide on my Space Coast site covers the rest of the county.
About 44 driving miles from central Merritt Island, usually about 50 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes with light traffic, mostly on State Road 528 west.
Yes, on the usual route. State Road 528, the Beachline Expressway, has electronic tolls, so plan on a SunPass or E-PASS transponder or toll by plate billing.
About 65 driving miles to the Magic Kingdom area, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes with light traffic, and longer when Interstate 4 or the park roads are busy.
By miles, Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) is about 27 miles away. By drive time, Orlando International (MCO) is often close to the same trip because of the SR 528 connection, and it has many more flights.
About 70 driving miles, roughly 1.5 hours, usually by Interstate 95 north.
